At the bottom of the Technical Guide were two entries: “For single language printing” and “For co-edition printing”. The last one said how to prepare separate color and B&W pages so when a second language edition is printed only the B&W pages have to be changed. Very interesting but we weren’t planning a second language edition! We were reading between the lines.
So we inquired further; if we separated out the color pages as if prepping for co-edition the cost would go down even more. So the new plan called for three color sections, called signatures, each having 16 pages. All the other 16 page signatures were to be printed in B&W and they would assemble them according to page numbers during binding. We did some quick calculations, presented revised page numbers and asked for a new quote. That quote came in $2.81 less per single copy in quantity than the earlier quote. We had found our printer!
